Liposuction, alternately known as lipoplasty(fat modelling)/liposculpture suction/lipectomy/lipo(suction assisted fat removal) removes fat from many different sites of human body. It incorporates removal of exercise – resistant fat with a tube/vacuum device. The procedure is an outpatient procedure and is performed under the effect of general anesthesia or intravenous sedation or local anesthesia.

The two common techniques used for liposuction :
A. SAL Suction Assisted Liposuction (traditional technique), here the surgeon uses a hollow tube to remove the fat.
B. Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction(UAL) : This technique incorporates the use of a specialised cannula to release the ultrasound vibrations within the body. The vibrations transferred rupture the walls of the fat cells and liquefy the fat, making suction an easier process.
External Ultrasound assisted liposuction (XUAL or EUAL) : A type of UAL, this procedure applies the ultrasonic energy from the outside of the body. The ultrasonic energy is applied through the skin thereby negating the need of specialised cannula.
Recovery : Complete recovery may take six months, depending upon the fat that is removed, but noticeable changes are visible within two weeks, as swelling subsides. The patient is advised to follow a diet regime,and consistent exerciseto avoid any irregularities.
