STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN POST-OPERATIVE CARE, ESPECIALLY TO MANAGE ANAEMIA :
To minimise blood loss before and after surgery, and to manage anemia, intensive care protocols are applied :
- Induced Hypothermia slows down the metabolism of anaemic patients and helps reduce the oxygen demand in such patients
- Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can be used to control oxygen at a pressure higher than normal atmospheric pressure in order to increase oxygen content in a highly anaemic patient
- Any post-operative bloody drainage can be recovered by self-transfusing drainage
- Small paediatric tubes are used for smaller volumes of blood samples as compared to using a bigger test tube meant for adults. This is an important blood sparing technique.
