Dysentery Causes and Treatment: When to See a Gastroenterologist in Rajkot?

Dysentery often begins like an ordinary stomach upset, some discomfort and a loose motion or two. But dysentery rarely stays mild for long. The trips to the bathroom become frequent, joined by sharp abdominal cramps and fever.  And the appearance of blood or mucus in the stool is a sure sign that this is more than routine diarrhea. This is dysentery, and it usually needs prompt medical attention. In this article, we explain what dysentery is, how it is different from regular diarrhea, the main causes of dysentery, important warning signs to look out for, and when to go to the hospital at Rajkot. What Is Dysentery? The dysentery meaning is simple to understand. Dysentery is an infection of the intestines, specifically the colon. It causes inflammation of the lining of the gut and diarrhea with blood or mucus, cramping, and fever.  There are two usual culprits, or similar: bacillary dysentery, due to the bacterium Shigella, and amoebic dysentery, due to the parasite Entamoeba Histolytica. What’s the Difference Between Dysentery and Ordinary Diarrhea? The differences between diarrhea and dysentery are shown in the table below Feature Plain Diarrhea Dysentery Stool Loose, watery Blood or mucus visible in stool Cramping Mild, if any Sharp and painful Fever Rare Common, sometimes high Urge to go again Usually no Yes, often immediately after finishing Cause Contaminated food, water, or sometimes stress Bacterial and parasitic infections are common Duration Typically 1–3 days Often lasts longer than 2–3 days without treatment What Are the Types of Dysentery? There are two commonly recognized types of dysentery. Understanding the true meaning of dysentery requires identifying the specific type of infection involved. That decides the treatment. Bacillary Dysentery. Shigella bacteria cause most cases, though Campylobacter or E. coli may also cause the infection. What you see is blood or mucus mixed into your stool, a high temperature, and a stomach that keeps knotting up on you.  The onset is quick. It spreads through contaminated food or drinking water, and you can feel unwell within a day. Amoebic Dysentery: The parasite Entamoeba histolytica normally enters one’s body through contaminated water. Symptoms often appear several days after infection.  In some cases, the disease may develop further and reach the liver, where it will cause an abscess. More than 300,000 children under five die from diarrheal diseases in India every year, a burden closely tied to water quality.  A Delhi-based study tracking 553 children found diarrhea prevalence jumped from 40.7% overall to 67.6% during the monsoon.  According to India’s National Center for Disease Control, reports of water contamination consistently align with seasonal surges in bacterial dysentery every monsoon. What Causes Dysentery? In most cases, it comes down to what you eat, drink, or touch. A few more causes include: Water nobody bothered to boil, filter, or treat Street food, cut fruit, salads left sitting out, an open invitation for flies A skipped handwash after the toilet or before a meal; either one counts Sharing utensils or close quarters with someone already unwell Waterlogging during monsoons and sewage water seeping in unnoticed to your tap When Should Diarrhea Symptoms Start to Concern You? Though dysentery is often confused with an ordinary stomach infection, it can be much more severe. Even though it overlaps with standard diarrhea symptoms, its distinguishing signs demand immediate attention. Clear blood or mucus in frequent loose stools.  Cramps in waves, with a bloated feeling around them.  Fever accompanied by chills.  Nausea, sometimes vomiting.  Tenesmus, in medical terms, is the urge to go again the second you have just finished.  Weakness and tiredness.  Some symptoms of dehydration, like dry mouth and dark-colored urine. Usually, the symptoms of diarrhea do not include all of the following: blood, high fever, and frequent urgency to evacuate. Dysentery, in contrast, is characterized by just this combination of symptoms. Who Is Most Vulnerable to Dysentery in India? Anyone can catch it. It does not treat everyone equally, though.  Children under five, with immune systems still finding their footing. Older adults, or anyone already weakened by another illness. Frequent street food eaters, roadside stalls especially, hygiene a coin toss. Households on borewell water or an unfiltered municipal line, worse after monsoon flooding. How Can Physicians Diagnose Dysentery? The process involves nothing complicated, only step-by-step evaluation done by the gastroenterologist. History Taking: Inquiry about the person’s food intake, water source, and recent travel history. Physical Exam: Mostly done to check for dehydration and abdominal tenderness. Stool test: This test normally reveals everything related to the person’s blood, mucus, parasites, and Shigella. Blood Test: Basically done to rule out any serious conditions. How Do Doctors Treat Dysentery? Treatment depends on two main factors: whether the infection stems from bacteria or a parasite, alongside the degree of fluid loss present at evaluation. Doctors most commonly treat dysentery in the following way:  Severe cases: Rehydration with ORS, plain water, light broths, and IV fluids at a hospital. Antibiotics in case of bacterial infection and metronidazole in case of amoebiasis. Go easy on your stomach with light meals, and actually rest; don’t just slow down. Fried, spicy, heavy food should wait till your gut’s had time to heal. Skip anti-diarrheal drugs because they may make things worse. What Happens If Dysentery Is Left Untreated? Catch it early, recover within days. Push it aside, and things spiral fast. This is the whole reason dysentery, meaning something more serious than an everyday stomach upset, actually matters. A few complications worth knowing. Dehydration severe enough to knock electrolyte balance off. Malnutrition, hardest on children; growth depends on steady nutrition. Infection spreading into the bloodstream, sepsis, a serious turn. Rectal prolapse, from repeated straining. Occasional kidney trouble in kids. How Can You Prevent Dysentery? Prevention is largely habits that you already know about. Just follow them every time. Wash your hands regularly with soap before eating and after going to the toilet. Use only boiled, filtered, or sealed bottled water. Be very cautious during the monsoon season. Do not consume food from the

What is Acid Reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux?

Symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux The symptoms of reflux oesophagitis is characterized by symptoms depend upon the tissue damage and repeated or prolonged exposure of the lining of the oesophagus to acidic or non-acidic contents from the stomach. In gastroesophageal reflux there is tissue damage in the oesophagus to called reflux esophagitis or erosive GERD.  In oesophageal symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation of acid is most common. But sometimes there are no apparent symptoms in gastroesophageal reflux disease .Symptoms of acid reflux vary from person to person. Periodic heartburn is a very common symptom is after meals, occurring mainly at night and wakes a person from his sleep in gastric reflux. Main cause of this is the acid regurgitation. Other symptoms of reflux oesophagitis: Causes of Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD)  Reflux oesophagitis occurs when the oesophageal defences are overwhelmed and the stomach contents are sent back to the oesophagus due to poor sphincter control mechanism (musculature weakness between the stomach and oesophagus causing acid reflux and damage to the tissues that reflux into the oesophagus. The goal of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) treatment is to: How to Cure Acid Reflux with Medications? Medications IN TREATMENT for GERD: The classes of medications prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) OR esophagitis treatment are pro-motility agents, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors. Lifestyle Changes in treatment of acid reflux: -Dietary changes or changes in daily routine to reduce the complaint of heartburn which can be aggravated by foods Common beverages such as coffee, tea, cola, tomato juice, and citrus juice may aggravate symptoms by irritating the oesophagus or stimulating stomach acid production .Start by reducing fatty foods, onions, and chocolate AND certain foods which can compromise the sphincter’s ability to prevent acid reflux. They can irritate the oesophagus and stimulate stomach acid production Surgery in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux Surgery in the treatment of acid reflux is an alternative considered when long-term medical treatment is either ineffective or undesirable, or when certain complications of GERD are present. Fundoplication Surgery for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is generally the surgical modality for treatment for acid reflux. In this procedure the upper curve of the stomach is wrapped around the oesophagus and sewn into place so that the lower portion of the oesophagus passes through a small tunnel of stomach muscle. The procedure is also called laparoscopic Nissan fundoplication. It is minimally invasive procedure which is done to restore the function of the lower oesophageal sphincter which can be damaged causing the acid reflux. Surgery for treatment of gerd   is usually a last resort. Managing THE symptoms with changes to diet and lifestyle is first line treatment for gerd.
