Hemato Oncology
in India
What is
Hematologic Cancer?
Hematologic cancers can originate in the bone marrow, immune system cells, or other tissues responsible for blood production. They are also known as blood cancers and develop when abnormal blood cells proliferate uncontrollably. These aberrant cells may displace healthy blood cells in the body, which serve essential functions. A significant portion of these cancers originates in the bone marrow, where blood is produced.
Types of Hematologic Cancers
The three main types of Hematologic cancers:
- Leukemia - It is a type of cancer that develops in the blood and bone marrow and is brought on by the fast creation of abnormal white blood cells.
- Lymphoma - White blood cells called lymphocytes, which aid in the body's capacity to fight infections, are the origin of lymphoma, which is a blood cancer that appears in the lymphatic system.
- Myeloma - Plasma cell cancer is known as Myeloma. Your body produces disease- and infection-fighting antibodies through plasma cells. Because myeloma cells stop your body from producing antibodies normally, your immune system is compromised and more vulnerable to infection.
What are the signs &
symptoms of Hematologic Cancers?
Depending on the type, hematologic cancers or blood cancer symptoms may vary from patient to patient. Among the few common symptoms are:
- Unusual bruising or bleeding
- Excessive perspiration, especially at night
- Fatigue or weakness
- Persistent fever
- Frequent infections
- Loss of appetite
- Unexplained weight loss
- Bone or joint pain
- Swollen glands or lymph nodes, often in the groin, armpits, or neck.
Causes of
Hematologic Cancers
DNA alterations or mutations in blood cells can result in hematologic cancers. When DNA provides new instructions to the cells, the body produces abnormal blood cells. These abnormal blood cells multiply and proliferate at a faster rate than normal, and, in some cases, live for longer periods of time. When this occurs, the normal blood cells are overwhelmed by the growing number of abnormal cells, which crowd out the normal blood cells and occupy space in the bone marrow. Consequently, the bone marrow eventually generates fewer normal cells, indicating that there are not enough regular cells present to perform their necessary functions.
Common Medical Tests to
Diagnose Hematologic Cancer
The hematologists mostly collaborate with other medical specialists to curate an effective treatment plan. Asking about your symptoms and medical history may help healthcare professionals start the diagnosing process. They will conduct thorough physical exams.
The doctor may advise one or more of these medical techniques for diagnosis, depending on the symptoms and severity:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) and Peripheral Smear
- Immunophenotyping
- Lymph Node Biopsy
- Molecular tests to look for Mutations
- Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy
- PET and MRI scans to stage many Lymphomas and Myelomas
- Using Cytogenetics to Check for Chromosomal Alterations in Cancer Cells
- Histopathology to look at tissue biopsies at the microscopic level
Treatment for Hematologic Cancer
Treatment for blood cancer is not universal. Before prescribing a treatment course, medical professionals take into account your age, general health, the type of blood cancer you have, and any potential adverse effects of the proposed course of therapy. Moreover, Hemato Oncology surgery is not a viable option for treating blood cancer.
Hemato Oncology Treatment in India
- Chemotherapy - Chemotherapy is a form of treatment that makes use of chemicals to either kill or weaken cancer cells. Chemotherapy is frequently advised for patients whose cancer has spread to several distinct body areas and for those who have had cancer surgery in order to avoid recurrence.
- Radiation Therapy - A device known as a linear accelerator is often used to give radiation treatment, which is the use of high-intensity X-rays to control or kill cancer cells as part of cancer therapy.
- Targeted Therapy - There are a number of oral and intravenous targeted therapies that are frequently utilized as either a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with chemotherapy or immunotherapy.
- Immunotherapy - One sort of treatment for cancer is immunotherapy. Immunotherapy targets and combats cancer using the patient's own immune system.
- Bone Marrow Transplant - Patients with a wide range of hemato-oncological conditions might benefit from Stem Cell or Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT).
- Hormonal Therapy - Numerous tumors have endogenous hormone receptors, and some depend on hormones for life and development. In hormone treatment, substances are used that prevent endogenous hormones from being produced or prevent hormones from binding to cancer cells.
- CAR T-cell Therapy - A kind of white blood cell called a T-cell lymphocyte is transformed into a more potent cancer treatment using CAR T-cell therapy.
