What is Cancer?
Cancer is a disease in which some of the body’s cells begin to divide and grow uncontrollably and can possibly spread to other parts of the body. The human body is made up of trillions of cells. These cells normally grow at a controlled rate and as needed. Cells become cancerous when they lose the ability to divide normally and multiply when they shouldn’t. This leads to the formation of growths or masses known as ‘tumours.’
Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide. However, with advancements in the surgical treatment of cancer and innovative treatment procedures, there is a great potential to treat and cure cancer successfully. Today, cancer is not something to be feared but rather something to be conquered.
- Brain cancer
- Breast cancer
- Colorectal cancer
- Stomach cancer
- Head and neck cancers
- Gynaecological cancers (uterine, cervical, or prostate cancer)
- Lung cancer
- Skin cancer
- Hepato-pancreato-biliary cancer
- Sarcoma (cancer of the bones, muscles, cartilage, connective tissues, and nerves)
What are the Signs & Symptoms of Cancer?
There can be a wide range of symptoms of cancer, which may be confused with the symptoms of other medical conditions. There can be generic signs at the region or site of cancer. Overall, there can be many general signs of cancer, which may include the following:
- Sudden or prolonged loss of appetite
- Excessive tiredness even after taking enough rest
- Unexplained weight loss
- Wounds that don't heal
- Finding lumps or growths on the body
- Unusual or unexplained bleeding or bruising
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Finding blood in vomit or urine or stool
- Unexplained pain that gets persistently worse
- Altered bowel habits
- Coughing that doesn't go away
- Changes in the skin colour or in the moles
- Sudden anaemia
What Causes Cancer?
Cancer is caused by changes or mutations in the genes of the cells, which cause them to start dividing abnormally. Such growth can be triggered in a number of cells within a region, which can continue to grow and spread to the surrounding areas (malignant) or form a lump of tissues at one place (benign). The lump of growth thus formed is called a tumour. What triggers such a reaction in cells cannot be pinpointed but scientists believe that it is essentially an interaction of many factors involving a person’s genes and certain environmental or external factors, such as
- Physical carcinogens, such as UV rays or ionising radiation
- Chemical carcinogens, such as smoking, asbestos, arsenic, etc.
- Biological carcinogens, such as bacterial, viral or other infections
Cancer can develop at any age but it has been observed more in the ageing population. There are certain risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing cancer which include
- Lifestyle factors, including smoking, having a high-fat diet, and working in a toxic environment
- Family history of cancers
- Genetic disorders
- Exposure to certain viruses such as the Epstein Barr virus and HIV
Diagnostic Tests for Cancer
Diagnosis of cancer requires extensive examination through blood, urine, and tissue samples apart from understanding the physical symptoms. Sometimes, tumours may form lumps on the body, which may be benign or malignant. Oncologists may want to be sure of its nature and test the mass in a laboratory. For this, a biopsy needs to be performed by a surgical oncologist. This involves retrieving a small mass of the lump through surgical methods. Apart from incisional procedures, various imaging tests need to be performed which may include the following
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
- Computed Tomography
- Positron Emission Tomography
- X-Rays
- Mammography
- Bone Scintigraphy
- Iodine Meta-Iodobenzylguanidine (MIGB)
- Colonoscopy
- PET-CT
- Pap Smear Test
- Endoscopic ultrasound
- Bone Marrow Examination
- Sigmoidoscopy
- Breast cancer screening
- Upper gastrointestinal series
- Cystoscopy
- Immunohistochemistry
- Mamma Print
- Mediastinoscopy
- Urine Cytology
- Virtual Colposcopy
There are certain tests which provide an idea about specific cancers which include the following
- Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) for prostate cancer
- Cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) for ovarian cancer
- Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) for liver cancer
Apart from these tests, general tests may also be performed to rule out other non-cancer related conditions. These tests may include:
- Complete blood count
- Blood protein test
- Circulating tumour cell test
Surgical Oncology Treatments
Surgical oncology pertains to providing diagnostic and surgical care services to cancer patients, with the aim of improving chances of survival, shortening recovery duration, and minimising side effects of treatment. The primary goal of surgical treatment is to remove tumours. Surgical intervention may also be required for reconstructive or restorative purposes to change the appearance or condition of affected parts of the body. Our team of oncology specialists at Wockhardt Hospitals’ Cancer Institute is engaged in continual research to deliver the highest quality of medical care through updated and innovative treatment modalities.
Different surgical techniques are employed for the treatment of cancer, which can be broadly classified into three categories
- Open or invasive surgery
Traditionally, the removal of tumours as part of invasive cancer surgery involves making large incisions to access the tumour site for removal.
- Minimally invasive surgery
Minimally invasive surgeries, performed as a mode of surgical cancer treatment, involve making smaller incisions, either manually or with robot assistance. Advanced and innovative cancer treatment options have enabled oncologists to provide high-quality medical care, sometimes even without making any incisions at all.
- Laparoscopic surgery
- Robotic surgery
- Laser surgery
- Cryosurgery
- Natural orifice surgery
- Electrosurgery
- Ablative surgery
Ablation may be carried out in conjunction with surgical removal of tumours for the purpose of destroying cancer cells around the tumour to restrict its spread.
