What is
Urologic Cancer?
Cancer is characterized by the formation of abnormal cells that proliferate uncontrollably and have the capacity to invade and destroy normal human tissue. Urologic cancers are the growth of abnormal cells in the male and female urinary systems, as well as the male reproductive system. These cancers are quite prevalent. Environmental, lifestyle, genetic, and other factors may be connected to urologic cancers. As urological cancer treatment techniques have advanced throughout time, patients are now given a variety of alternatives to choose from in order to best meet their requirements.
What Signs and Symptoms are
Present in Urologic Cancer?
Most of the time, symptoms do not appear until the cancer has advanced. The location, size, type, and extent of dissemination of the tumor all influence the symptoms of urologic cancer. Some of these symptoms include:
- Fatigue and weight loss are common among cancer patients.
- One of the earliest signs of bladder, kidney, and prostate cancer is the presence of blood in the urine without accompanying pain.
- Changes in sexual function or difficulty urinating may potentially indicate bladder or urethral cancer.
- Skin growths or sores could be indications of penile or testicular cancer.
Types of & Urologic Cancer
Types of urologic cancers are identified by the structures they impact, including:
- Kidney cancer - Kidney cancer is a type of cancer affecting the kidneys. Kidney cancer is caused by mutations in the DNA of the body. People with hypertension, smoking, and obesity are more likely to develop kidney cancer.
- Adrenal cancer - Adrenal carcinoma is a rare cancer that primarily affects the adrenal gland. The adrenal glands are triangular glands located on the top of the kidneys, having two major components called the adrenal cortex and medulla.
- Prostate cancer - A common cancer among males is prostate cancer. It is caused by the uncontrolled proliferation of cells in the prostate gland.
- Testicular cancer - When cells in the testes or other reproductive organs start to divide too quickly, a rare form of cancer known as testicular cancer occurs.
- Bladder cancer - The development of bladder cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the bladder lining begin to proliferate. Urine that contains blood is among the first signs of bladder cancer.
- Penile Cancer - Although it is an uncommon kind of cancer, penile cancer can affect men who have rashes or unusual growths on their penises. A possible risk factor is a long-term HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection.
- Urethral Cancer - This is a rare form of cancer that develops when abnormal cell division occurs in the urinary tract (the tube through which urine exits the body).
Common Medical Tests to
Diagnose Urologic Cancers
In order for urological cancers to be treated with successful clinical results, they must first be diagnosed at early stages. The following are some of the diagnostic tests that are recommended by our expert Uro Oncologists:
- Medical History & Physical Examination - A quick physical exam is performed along with considering the patient's medical history whenever a patient seeks medical treatment because of urological cancer symptoms.
- Lab tests - There are certain blood tests that can help detect prostate cancer, such as the PSA test. It may also be necessary to perform blood tests in order to evaluate the kidneys' functions.
- Imaging Tests - Ultrasound, PET, CT, and MRI scans are some of the most frequently recommended imaging tests for the evaluation, diagnosis, staging, and monitoring of urological cancer.
- Cystoscopy or Ureteroscopy - The presence of tumors in the bladder and ureter may be detected by cystoscopy or ureteroscopy. In these procedures, the urethra is used as a passageway for a thin tube holding a video camera and a light source to inspect the urinary system.
- Bone Scanning - A bone scan may be necessary to measure the size of the tumor and to determine the stage of cancer.
- Biopsy - The biopsy involves taking a sample of tissue from the area suspected to be cancerous and examining it under a microscope.
Treatments for Urologic Cancer
Our board-certified specialists in urologic oncology would collaborate with a radiotherapy specialist for a comprehensive treatment. The urologic specialist would assess whether additional treatments, such as chemotherapy, are necessary.
Urologic oncology surgery is a key component of the treatment of urologic cancers. Examples of surgical procedures for urologic cancers include:
- Prostatectomy - It is a surgical procedure for the treatment of prostate cancer.
- Cystectomy - This procedure is a surgical treatment for the treatment of bladder cancer.
- Nephrectomy - Nephrectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove kidney cancer cells.
