World Cancer Day is an international day marked on 4 February to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, treatment and surgeries. World Cancer Day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration.

Beating cancer and surviving it with self-confidence. Cancer cells are abnormal cells that grow uncontrollably forming a mass called a tumour anywhere in the body. As per statistics The Indian Council of Medical Research finds that India is likely to have more than 17.3 lakh new cases of cancer and over 8.8 lakh deaths due to the disease by 2020. Breast cancer is the most common of the types of cancers occurring in India followed by lung cancer and cervical cancer in India today. Cancer is a difficult journey, both for the one who is suffering as also their care givers. We at Wockhardt Hospital firmly believe that with correct diagnosis and treatment plan, cancer can be beaten giving a patient an opportunity for a new lease to life.

A 55 year old lady suffering was diagnosed of breast cancer changing her predicament in life, visited Wockhardt Hospital South Mumbai for treatment. Generally women discover Breast Lumps on self-examination which is first sign or symptom of breast cancer breast along with various skin changes. On mammography breast cancer can also be detected. Breast cancer can spread when the cancer cells get into the blood or lymph system and are carried to other parts of the body and can then be fatal.

Understanding the crisis and life changing circumstances that she might face as part of the treatment she requested the doctors at Wockhardt Hospital, South Mumbai to preserve her breast tissue and not undergo radiation therapy. The psychological impact of breast cancer alone can be so daunting to a patient and for some the thought of losing their natural appearance can further increase the stress and plight of the patient undergoing the treatment modalities. The adverse effects of radiation on the patient are also severe.  Radiotherapy causes side effects because it affects healthy tissue as well as cancer cells. Although most side effects are temporary, some may be permanent and some can appear months or even years after treatment finishes. These changes can be skin changes around the breast with swelling and a general feeling with tiredness. Removal of the breast through mastectomy though lifesaving can change the complete outward appearance as well.

The doctors understood the patient’s dilemma and decided to plan alternative mode of treatment. She was deemed a fit candidate for the Breast Reconstruction Surgery and radiation was avoided.  The breast surgery was carried out by our skilled surgeons Dr Meghal Sanghvi and Dr. Akshay Deshpande at Wockhardt Hospitals, South Mumbai. Women who have surgery as part of their breast cancer treatment may choose breast reconstruction surgery to rebuild the shape and look of the breast. The benefits of breast reconstructive surgeries are to permanently regain the breast shape and after a mastectomy. Breast reconstruction can make one feel better renewing her self-confidence. Certain factors such as healing, overall health status of the patient and the extent of the cancer are taken into consideration before the surgery.

Presently the patient is undergoing chemotherapy under the guidance of the senior oncologists, Dr Padiwala a renowned oncologist at Wockhardt hospital, South Mumbai. The patient’s life is proceeding as normal after the reconstructive surgery and there keeping intact her self-assurance and reviving  hope.

Finally he was admitted to Wockhardt hospitals Nagpur and was suffering with severe breathlessness and high grade fever. At the hospital the clinical experts decided to perform various Investigations which later revealed massive fluid around the heart and Lungs.

The patient became critical and necessary medical attention was required to be given. He was immediately shifted to ICU and drain was inserted around lungs to decompress chest cavity to reduce the discomfort and reduce the chances of mortality.

Wockhardt Hospitals doctors carried out required haematological investigations on the patient and discovered that   the patient was suffering from a blood cancer condition called Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (A type of blood cancer). Clinical acumen and advanced haematological investigation and the Wockhardt Hospitals unit was able to reveal the actual nature of the patients disease and treatment modalities were set to treat the condition of the patient.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma formerly known as Hodgkin’s disease is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of your immune system. It may affect people of any age, but is most common in people between 20 and 40 years old and those over 55. In this condition, cells in the lymphatic system grow abnormally and may spread beyond it. Doctors aren’t sure what causes Hodgkin’s lymphoma. But it begins when an infection-fighting cell called a lymphocyte develops a genetic mutation. The advances in medical diagnosis and treatment today have helped give people with this disease the chance for a full recover like in our case today.

After the diagnosis was revealed the patient was started on Chemotherapy with all necessary supportive measures.  The patient has completed his course chemotherapy and tests reveal that the patient is completely cured with no evidence of Lymphoma.  After the treatment the Patient is doing well and has resumed all normal activities.

The patient was grateful to prompt the diagnosis and his recovery was solely the judgement   of the clinical expertise of the medical oncology team and the advanced laboratory diagnostics in haematology department set up at Wockhardt hospital Nagpur.

Case Study 2 – A Rare and Aggressive Tumour Mass Excised by Surgical Oncology at Rajkot Hospital Saves Patient Life.

A 55 year old male presented to Rajkot hospital with a large swelling on the left side of lower chest and lower flank for approximately. He was suffering with this lesion for 2 and half years. The swelling was associated with pain and patient had difficulty in breathing. Initially the patient had ignored his condition and avoided any medical attention. The swelling grew in size and became hard in consistency. The patient then became concerned and decided to seek medical advice. He visited Wockhardt hospital and took consultation of Dr.  Dipen D. Patel surgical oncologist at Wockhardt Hospitals in Rajkot.

Dr Patel advised the patient to carry out a CT scan of the stomach which revealed an extensive mass in the left lower chest region measuring approximately 10 by 10 cms along with another soft tissue swelling. A laboratory investigation was then advised with a biopsy. Tissue sample revealed a cancerous tumour, called Chondrosarcoma. The patient was advised surgery in the form of excision for the same. As per the staging of the patient the tumour mass was a grade 1 and therefore chance of it spreading and become aggressive would have been avoided if the surgery would be performed.

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumour mass. It is classified as a sarcoma which is composed of cartilage producing cells of the bone. The overall incidence of this cancer is 1 in 20000 per year

According to Dr Dipen the tumour is highly invasive and is most commonly seen after the age of 40. It occurs generally in the long bones like femur, homers and pelvis. The condition gives pain and compresses the surrounding structures like nerves and arteries.

The survival rate of this tumour progressively reduces as the grade (staging of the tumour mass on histopathology) increases. Due to the highly aggressive state of the tumour the patient chances of survival is slim. Chondrosarcomas are generally radiation and chemo resistant and the only choice of treatment is surgery.

The speciality of Surgical Oncology at Wockhardt hospital ensures the removal of the tumour and surrounding tissue is carried out. The goal of the surgical oncologist is to diagnose cancer, find its location, remove the tumour following prerequisites (after understanding whether it is operable or not) and ascertaining its spread.  The end result would be to restore the body’s appearance or function.

Dr Patel performed a successful surgery and was able to excise the tumour mass without any complications. Patient recovered with supportive care in the hospital and reports revealed that the chest cavity was free from any malignancy.
