Can Holi colours increase the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease?

Holi, the festival of colors, is widely celebrated across the country. This year, the festivities are spread across two days — March 7 and 8 — with different regions celebrating the festival on different days. But, while Holi is all about playing with rang, the harmful effects of the colors cannot be stressed enough. As such, experts caution against the use of chemical-laced colors for not just the skin but for the respiratory system, too. According to medical practitioners, store-bought holi colors may contain heavy metals, broken pieces of glass, chemicals, and pesticides that are responsible for aggravating Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) — a chronic inflammatory lung condition that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. “The colors are loaded with hazardous chemicals such as mercury, silica, lead, glass, and pesticides or detergents which are toxic for the skin, eyes, and even lungs. The colors can enter the mouth and aggravate conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. COPD is an inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs,” Dr. Chetan Jain, pulmonologist, told indianexpress.com. The signs and symptoms of the condition are inability to breathe, cough, mucous (sputum) production, and wheezing. “Bronchitis, asthma, and allergies are all exacerbated by chromium, which is also present in Holi colors, along with mercury that has an influence on the health of the kidneys, liver, and an unborn baby. Iron can enhance skin sensitivity to light. Additionally, the silica present in these colors can cause dry skin. Hence, it is extremely important to remain vigilant and report any odd changes to your doctor,” advised Dr. Jain. In fact, even inhalation of organic dry colors can precipitate acute exacerbation of asthma/COPD. “Try to avoid color inhalation as that can trigger cough or breathlessness,” said Dr. Aniket Mule, consultant, internal medicine, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road. According to Dr. Tanvi Bhatt, a pulmonologist, the colors also lead to rhinitis (a reaction that happens in the eyes, nose, and throat when allergens in the air trigger symptoms) causing runny nose, sneezing, and even pneumonitis. It causes chest congestion, difficulty in breathing, and fatigue. What can be done? It is better to stay safe while playing Holi by using organic colors. “Consult an expert if you happen to ingest any color by mistake,” Dr. Bhatt added. World Kidney Day: 14 March, 2024

Dr. Abhishek K. Shirkande, DNB Nephrology MD Medicine – “As we celebrate World Kidney Day 2024, I’d like to take a moment to applaud, highlight, and support all efforts around the world to raise awareness and emphasize the importance of kidney diseases. Although we live in a world divided into 195 countries, kidney diseases have no citizenship, and no borders, and are a growing public health challenge worldwide. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is regarded as a silent killer. Did you know that a person can lose 90% of their kidney function without showing any symptoms? Fatigue, loss of concentration, decreased appetite, swollen feet, breathlessness with exertion, and foamy or red urine are all symptoms of kidney disease. Stay fit, being active, and eating a healthy diet are all preventive measures for kidney disease. Check and control your blood sugar and blood pressure; drink plenty of fluids; avoid over-the-counter medications and excessive painkiller use; and have your kidney function checked on a regular basis.” Dr. Nitin Sonavane, Senior Consultant Nephrologist, and Kidney transplant physician, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road – “Kidneys perform multiple functions. Filters the blood and removes the toxins from our body, excreting them in urine. Maintains sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium levels in the blood to promote normal functions of other organ systems. Kidneys maintain and control blood pressure. Kidneys produce the hormone erythropoietin required to make red blood cells, while the bone marrow makes them. Kidneys make active Vitamin D3, required for calcium, phosphorus, and bone metabolism. The two most common illnesses affecting the kidneys are uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension. Optimal blood sugar and hypertension control would significantly reduce the burden of kidney diseases in the community.” Dr. Hasit Patel, Nephrologist and Transplant Physician – “India is considered a new hub for chronic kidney disease. Poorly controlled diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and excessive use of pesticides are the main reasons for kidney failure in India. Eat healthy foods, including fruits and vegetables. Monitor and control blood pressure and sugar levels. Restrain from smoking and alcohol and avoid self-medication. Even the rise of creatinine (a kidney function test) to a level of 1.4 is an early sign of kidney dysfunction, so don’t ignore it.” Dr. Bhanu Mishra, MBBS MD DrNB ISN ANIO CNC (USA) Nephrologist And Transplant Physician – “World Kidney Day is a reminder that our kidneys are vital organs that play a crucial role in maintaining our overall health and well-being. It is a day to raise awareness about the importance of preventing kidney disease, promoting early detection, and managing the condition effectively. By taking care of our kidneys, we can reduce the risk of developing chronic kidney disease and other related health problems. Let us use this day to commit to healthy lifestyle choices, regular check-ups, and supporting research efforts to improve kidney health for all.” Dr. Umesh Godhani, MD DM (Nephro) – “A kidney transplant is the best treatment for patients with kidney failure. It gives longer survival with a good quality of life. However, the number of patients receiving transplants is less than 1% of all kidney failure patients. One of the factors for fewer numbers transplants is not the availability of blood group-matched donor in the family. Now renal transplantation can be done without blood group matching by way of Dr. Umesh Godhani, senior nephrologist and transplant physician of Ahmedabad, and his team recently performed a successful SWAP kidney transplant at SAL hospital for the first time in the private sector of Ahmedabad in the last 8–10 years. So an A group donor from Pair 1 donated to an A group recipient from Pair 2, and a B group donor from Pair 2 donated to a B group recipient from Pair 1. The challenges were to match both pairs in donor age, donor GFR, and renal anatomy. Dr. Aakash Shingada, MBBS, DNB (Med), DNB (Nephro), MRCP (London), FASN (USA), SCE Nephro (UK) – “With modernization and the adoption of western habits, lifestyle diseases are on an exponential rise and India has become the diabetes capital of the world. Diabetes, hypertension, and obesity ultimately lead to organ damage and increase the incidence of kidney diseases. COVID caught us unawares and taught us the importance of health, and on this World Kidney Day, we focus on being prepared for the unexpected. A lot of work is being done in the field of Nephrology and the last few years have seen a lot of options coming forward for preventing the worsening of kidney function, especially because of diabetes. But the key is to pick these kidney illnesses early in life so that treatment options can be utilized to prevent irreparable damage. I recommend all those who are at high risk of kidney diseases (Elderly, Diabetics, patients with high BP, stone disease, those who had high BP during pregnancy, those with a family history of kidney diseases) to get routine screening done for kidney diseases and pick the illness early, thereby preparing ourselves from unexpected diagnosis at advanced stages. I recommend everyone eat a healthy balanced diet, avoid unnecessary supplements, and over-the-counter pain meds, and regularly exercise to prevent damage to our internal organs and not just to live longer, but to live better meaningful lives.” Dr. Sundar Sankaran, MD DNB FRCP FISOT, “The World Kidney Day 2024 theme is “Kidney Health for All: Preparing for the Unexpected and Supporting the Vulnerable!”.Kidneys are amazing organs, and by following a proper diet and making lifestyle modifications, we can keep our kidneys healthy. Less salt, less sugar, less stress, and no smoking can keep our kidneys healthy. On this day, we should take a pledge to be organ donors and save lives.” Dr. Waheedu Zaman, MBBS, MS (Gen Surgery), MCh (Urology), DNB (Urology), MNAMS “As we commemorate World Kidney Day in 2024, I want to take a moment to recognize, support, and applaud all initiatives to increase awareness of kidney diseases around the globe. Although there are 195 countries in the world, kidney diseases have no citizenship, and no boundaries, and are undoubtedly a growing public health concern on
Ovarian Cancer Leads to Fluid Buildup in Lower Abdomen

In a shocking incident, a 39-year-old woman from Huddersfield was diagnosed with deadly cancer which she confused with bloating and looked nine months pregnant. According to reports, the woman had been having trouble eating. Doctors diagnosed her with stress-related constipation and noted that she was too young to be critically ill. She also mentioned having trouble bending over and experiencing occasional wooziness, stiffness, and pain. She was diagnosed when her cancer progressed to the third stage. She had previously been misdiagnosed with everything from Crohn’s disease to irritable bowel syndrome. Finally, she was found to have ovarian cancer. Dr. Gandhali Deorukhkar, a Consultant of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Wockhardt Hospital told News9, “Ovarian cancer is an abnormal growth of cells that forms into ovaries if multiplied quickly. They can even invade any healthy tissue and can spread beyond the fallopian tube, ovaries, or the breast and even toward the brain cells. A lot of times ovarian cancer leads to fluid accumulation in the lower abdomen which is called ascites, a major reason for bloating and swelling in the lower abdomen.” Annual Screening Dr. Deorukhkar stated, unfortunately, ovarian cancer doesn’t have any symptoms in the early stage therefore, annual screening or ultrasound is suggested. Women with the condition may see symptoms like abdominal bloating, swelling, indigestion or feeling of fullness when they eat something, fatigue, discomfort in the pelvic area, back pain, and changes in bowel habits. If a woman has all these symptoms and is not getting cured then it is suggested to have an ultrasound done to rule out ovarian cancer or any kind of bulky ovary. A very small percentage of ovarian cancer cases in younger women can be genetically predisposed. Generally speaking, diseases like breast cancer and ovarian cancer are more susceptible to genes like BRCA1 and BRCA2. Additional causes include obesity, smoking, infertility, and the increased risk of ovarian cancer in women who do not breastfeed.
Are short people more prone to turn psychopaths? Check out why

According to a recent study published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, it was proved that shorter and bitter people are relatively unhappy with their lives. This feeling of constant unhappiness and resentment may push them to engage in antagonistic behaviours in an attempt to offset their height disadvantage. This mental condition is usually referred to as ‘The Napoleon Complex’, or in other words, ‘The Short Man Syndrome’. We recently reached out to a psychiatrist to know more about The Napoleon Complex and how we do our part to cease it from existing in our beings. Check out the Q&A below. Is it true that shorter people have a higher affinity towards aggression and can even end up as psychopaths? There is insufficient data about this, but it is known that low self-confidence in certain areas is an important aspect of psychopaths. How does psychology play an important role in a series of events that uncover a person becoming a psychopath? Abnormalities of Genetics and parent-child relationship help in shaping the future of psychological aspects of psychopaths. The living environment plays a crucial role as childhood episodes of abuse, neglect, and emotional suffering are known predisposing factors. Impairment of empathy and remorse reaction, difficulty in cognitive and emotional processes, a disregard for social norms, Impulsively and aggression are all parts of personality and thinking that can predispose towards psychopathy. Some studies have suggested the role of responses to stimuli and have found reduced reactivity to pleasurable stimuli in these people. There is also difficulty responding to punishment and difficulty in controlling their emotions as well as impulses. How can one avoid giving in to psychopathic tendencies to avoid being branded as one? Developing self-awareness and empathy-building practices can help. Being grateful for the good things in life and rewarding oneself for good deeds done should be the preferred way of thinking. Developing a sense of control over overt emotional needs can also help. Physical health also helps in keeping good mental health as well. Dr. Sonal AnandPsychiatristWockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road
Feeling of Falling While Sleeping or Having a Sudden Jerk Right Before Sleep?

You’ve hit the bed and are waiting for a sound, restful sleep to consume you. But as soon as you find yourself drifting off to sleep, have you ever felt like you are falling or experienced a sudden startling shock? If yes, chances are that you have experienced ‘sleep starts’, also known as ‘hypnic jerks’ or ‘myoclonic jerks’. But, what does it mean? Simply put, these jerks are sudden, involuntary muscle contractions that can occur when a person is falling asleep. “Sleep starts, also known as hypnic or hypnagogic jerks, are an abrupt, quick, and forceful contraction of the entire body, or of single or several body segments. These generally happen when a person is starting to nod off,” Dr. Vipul Gupta said. “A large portion of the body is typically affected by one abrupt jerk as the person starts falling asleep. It is most likely to impact the arms and legs. A sensory flash, feeling of falling, and a visual dream can also mark a sleep start.” Agreeing, Dr. Krishnan P R, said that sleep starts are thought to be caused by sudden relaxation of the muscles as you transition from wakefulness to sleep. As a person falls asleep, their body temperature drops, and their muscles relax, which can trigger a reflex response in the nervous system that causes sudden muscle contractions. Usually, a sleep start does not make you wake up from your sleep. “This implies that you would probably not remember a jerk that your bed companion noticed,” Dr. Pavan Pai, Consultant Interventional Neurologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road said. While the exact cause of sleep starts is not known, experts believe that many people can experience these jerks as a result of stress, anxiety, or other psychological factors. “While there is no main specific cause behind hypnagogic jerks, some factors like excessive caffeine intake, and physical, and emotional stress can gradually increase the frequency. Extreme tiredness and sleep deprivation can also be a major factor behind these hypnic jerks,” Dr. Gupta said. Sharing their incidence, Dr. Pai highlighted that about 60 percent to 70 percent of people have them. “Most individuals only experience them sometimes. Men and women of various ages are affected by sleep disorders. Adults are more prone to complain about jerks, which are persistent or violent.” Agreeing, Dr. Gupta said that it is important to note that it is not necessary that people experiencing these will experience them every time they fall asleep. Are they risky? Doctors share that sleep starts are generally not considered to be harmful or risky. “However, in rare cases, they can be a symptom of a sleep disorder such as restless legs syndrome or periodic limb movement disorder. If sleep starts are accompanied by other symptoms such as insomnia or daytime fatigue, it is recommended to consult a doctor to rule out any underlying conditions,” Dr. Krishnan said. Additionally, they aren’t dangerous until and unless people aren’t hurting themselves or start experiencing symptoms like incontinence, injury, pain, or confusion, Dr. Gupta added. If you are bothered by these sleep starts or have been experiencing them frequently, here are some tips to follow: Dr. Pavan PaiConsultant Interventional NeurologistWockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road To book an appointment call: +918108101104 Source: https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/health/sleep-starts-hypnic-myoclonic-jerks-causes-prevention-sleep-101-8454666/ FAQs on Feeling of Falling While Sleeping Q. Is a hypnic jerk serious? Despite being startling, hypnic jerks are usually not taken seriously. They typically do not pose health hazards and are regular events during the shift from awake to sleep. However, it might be wise to speak with a medical expert for a more thorough assessment if they severely interfere with sleep or are accompanied by other severe symptoms. Q. What causes the falling feeling when sleeping? A common explanation for the feeling of falling asleep is hypnic jerks or sleep starts. These uncontrollably jerky muscle movements happen when you’re about to go asleep or wake up, and it’s thought that the brain interprets muscular relaxation as a fall. They are often not a reason for concern and are thought to be a typical aspect of the sleep process. Q. Why do you feel like you’re falling in your sleep? The sensation of falling asleep is often due to hypnic jerks, also known as sleep starts. It is believed that the brain misinterprets muscular relaxation as falling, resulting in uncontrollable muscle spasms that occur when you go from awake to sleep. Usually benign, they are a component of the regular sleep cycle.
A rare large tumor on the back of a 58-year-old man removed after complex surgery in Nagpur

A 58-year-old man has been relieved of a large cancerous tumor on his back following a procedure conducted at a private hospital in the city recently. The tumor, known as ‘myxofibrosarcoma or MFS’, is a very rare soft tissue tumor and tends to form in the hands and feet. But this man also had it backward. It was 18cmx15cm big, but not painful. The man was feeling very uncomfortable due to the weight of the protruding part of his body and due to this he approached the doctors. Neurosurgeon Dr. Rahul Zamad, who operated on this tumor at Wockhardt Hospitals, said, “Myxofibrosarcoma is already a rare soft tissue tumor and it is even rare for it to occur in this part of the body. Soft-tissue sarcomas are uncommon tumors, and are traditionally managed by wide excisional surgery and radiotherapy.” MFS is one of many types of cancer that begins in the connective tissues that support and surround the organs, bones, and muscles. Dr. Rahul Zamad has also said that the patient had previously been operated on in another hospital but the tumor could not be removed completely and “the report was not clear about the type of tumor”. MFS is classified as low- to high-grade tumors “When he arrived at our hospital, he had complete restriction of all lower body movements and no urinary symptoms. MRI showed a large tumor, which was firmly attached to the muscles below.” Dr. Rahul Zamad said. Similar tumors can also cause abnormalities, such as neoplasms, infection, trauma, or congenital or immune myopathy. In the first two days, the chief physician, Dr. Swarup Verma, controlled the active systemic infection of the patient. Then later, Dr. Zamad has to do a full resection of the tumor. “We call this R-zero resection in medical terms. This microscopically indicates a margin-negative resection, in which no gross or microscopic tumor remains in the primary tumor bed. Now, the patient is under radiotherapy,” They said. MFS is also classified as low- to high-grade tumors, and they have a recurrence rate of up to about 50%. Alcohol and its Impact on Liver Health

Are you Going Overboard on Alcohol? Well, then it is the right time to avoid having it. Alcohol consumption is not only linked to high blood pressure, digestive issues, stroke, or heart disease but also liver failure. A large number of people having alcohol tend to silently suffer from liver problems. In the below article, we aim to create awareness regarding alcohol’s impact on one’s liver. Currently, a majority of people are stressed and opt for alcohol or smoking to feel lighter. But, these things can do more harm than good. Consuming alcohol can take a toll on one’s overall well-being and impact every organ of the body. Alcohol consumption is commonly associated with various types of cancers, abnormal heart rhythms, alcohol use disorder, and a weak immune system. Moreover, alcohol consumption and liver problems go hand-in-hand. Alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) is common in India and the incidence is rising as a result of increasing levels of alcohol misuse How Does Alcohol Drinking Affect the Liver? Ethanol/alcohol is metabolized in the liver with help of a key enzyme called ADH ( Alcohol Dehydrogenase). Continuous and heavy Drinking creates oxidative stress in the liver. Liver cell capacity to neutralize this oxidative stress with help of antioxidants like glutathione, vitamins A, E, & C will get reduced with time. Increased oxidative stress produces liver cell damage and leads to Alcohol Related liver diseases. These are three of the types of liver disease that occur due to heavy alcohol consumption Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Alcoholic Fatty liver disease (steatosis): Fatty liver is one of the types of alcohol-related liver disease seen in many patients. It occurs when a person drinks excess alcohol in a short time span. In this condition, excess fat will get accumulated in the liver and will be shown on ultrasonography. Fat accumulation will cause inflammation in the liver tissue. This rarely causes any symptoms. If one stops drinking, this condition is reversible. Alcoholic Hepatitis Alcoholic Hepatitis is a more severe liver injury in which the inflammation (Swelling) of the liver cells occurs. One with this condition will exhibit symptoms such as poor appetite, abdominal pain, tiredness, jaundice, and even death. The Liver injury associated with mild alcoholic hepatitis is reversible if you stop drinking permanently but an injury in severe alcoholic hepatitis can be life-threatening and require liver replacement. Liver Cirrhosis or Scarring of the Liver If you are consuming alcohol on a regular basis then you need to be cautious. Yes, you have heard it right! Too much alcohol can lead to liver cirrhosis. Are you aware? Alcohol changes the chemicals that tend to break down and remove scar tissue. Thus, the scar tissue builds up in one’s liver and replaces normal healthy cells. Hence, the liver will fail to work as it is supposed to and one can lose his/her life. One may only see symptoms such as vomiting blood, swollen tummy, jaundice, excess sleepiness, and muscle cramps only when it is too late. There can be a liver failure and death due to cirrhosis. Currently, A Liver Transplant surgery is the only way to cure irreversible liver failure. The Last Word It is imperative for each and everyone to limit their alcohol intake and take charge of their health. Apart from that, just adhere to a well-balanced lifestyle. Try to eat well, quit smoking, exercise daily, and stay healthy.
Is it sadness or depression? Here’s how to tell the difference

Covid-19 has altered people’s lives in unimaginable ways. Stress brought on by such a hectic environment has the capacity to negatively affect our mood and state of mind. It may be common to feel down and sad. In some serious cases, some of us may suffer from depression. Despite the fact that these are all distinct disorders, it can be difficult for people to tell the difference between low mood, sadness, and depression. As a result, some people with depression mistakenly believe that they are sad, while those who are feeling down and sad mistakenly believe that they are depressed. This also happens because the symptoms of these conditions are not clear and they may overlap each other. An exclusive chat with Dr. Sonal Anand, Psychiatrist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, Mumbai, revealed that there is a significant difference between being depressed, and sad and having a low mood. The symptoms, underlying reasons, and methods of treatment of each condition differ from one another. In order to properly diagnose and cure your issues, you must first be cautious with their symptoms. Difference between low mood, sadness, and depression: Low mood Current stresses such as financial concerns, family issues, sleep challenges, chronic illnesses and stress-inducing arguments with individuals at home or at work, and disappointments, are typically what cause a low mood. They make a person feel exhausted and more restless than usual. In fact, a person may feel down without there being an obvious reason. However, it represents the emotional state that is now being experienced in light of the current situation and can go away on its own after a few days. General low mood symptoms may include: These symptoms can differ from person to person. To lift your mood, you can try eating your favorite food, watching a movie, going out with your friend and family, getting more sleep, or talking about your problems with someone. Sadness Sadness is a prevalent emotion that is often a response to a circumstance or someone’s actions. It is a feeling that can be associated easily with helplessness, despair, grief, diffidence, and sorrow, but not a mental condition. All of these circumstances may have a detrimental impact on your mood. But according to Dr. Anand, “Sadness is a fleeting emotion and may not last for a major portion of the day or might not affect your work output. It might go away by accepting or modulating the situation or self-soothing behaviors like crying or distracting oneself.” Symptoms of sadness may include: In case a person experiences sadness that doesn’t go away after a few days or weeks and finds themselves unable to function normally again, this could be an indication of depression. Consult your doctor in this case. What is depression? While sadness might go away with a heartfelt conversation, depression is something that must involve the help of a mental health professional. Depression, also called clinical depression or major depressive disorder, is a mood disorder and an abnormal emotional state. From a more general standpoint, this might have an impact on how you feel and act. You may experience symptoms of depression such as: Depression is a long-term clinical disorder and can last for weeks, months, and even years. To treat it, you need to follow the prescribed medicines, take therapy sessions, and various other measures. Though a person may take time to recover, it isn’t a permanent condition. Stroke While Exercising: Neurologist Wants People To Remember These 4 Things

Recently, there were many reports about people suffering from a stroke while exercising in the gym. Doctors have also reported a sudden spurt in the number of stroke cases this winter. Did you know that there is a strong connection between winter and brain strokes? “Cold weather constricts the blood vessels, which can increase blood pressure – a major risk factor for stroke. However, blood tends to thicken and become stickier during extreme cold, which makes it easier to clot. Most strokes are due to blood clotting, which blocks a blood vessel to the brain. Our bodies’ reaction to cold weather tends to put added stress on the heart as we “clamp down” to preserve heat and energy,” explains Dr. Pavan Pai, Interventional Neurologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road. Dr. Pai wants people to know about these 4 important things about an Ischemic Stroke: Symptoms of Ischemic Stroke Dr. Pai cites the case of one of his patients, a 56-year-old woman who suffered from an Ischemic Stroke while exercising in the gym in the morning. She suddenly developed right-side body weakness, and drowsiness, and then became unconscious. When she was brought to the emergency ward, she had complete weakness in the right side of her body, couldn’t speak, and was drowsy, says Dr. Pai. What To Do If You or Someone Suffers Stroke? “B.E.F.A.S.T (Balance Loss, Eyesight Blurring or Loss, Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time) and seek treatment within the golden hour of the stroke to recover without any complications,” says Dr. Pai. Know The Golden Hour of Stroke The first hour or the 60 minutes after the onset of stroke symptoms is referred to as the “golden hour” for stroke patients as they have a high chance of survival. Treatment within a window period of 4.5 hours right after experiencing symptoms of stroke (golden period) leads to better outcomes. Treatment of Ischemic Stroke The woman Dr. Pai mentioned above was brought to the hospital during the golden period. Her MRI brain showed an Ischemic Stroke with complete occlusion of a medium-sized artery. She was first given a clot buster injection and later taken up for mechanical thrombectomy. Mechanical Thrombectomy is done to unclog the blocked artery and restore the blood supply. It is a life-saving procedure and can help stroke patients improve their quality of life, adds Dr. Pai. She was discharged after 6 days and has now resumed her daily routine.
